McSilver Institute and NYU Langone Health’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity Submit Testimony on Maternal Health to the New York City Council

On October 23, 2025, the NYU McSilver Institute joined NYU Langone’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity (IEHE) in submitting testimony to the New York City Council Committee on Hospitals and Committee on Women and Gender Equity, on the occasion of an oversight hearing aimed at improving maternal health in New York City. This written testimony was authored by Damali M. Wilson, PhD, MSN, Maternal Health Equity Fellow at the NYU McSilver and NYU Langone Health IEHE; Rose Pierre-Louis, JD, Executive Director at the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research; and Natasha Williams, EdD, MPH, Associate Professor at NYU Langone Health’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity.

The testimony connected the latest evidence surrounding the urgent crisis of pregnancy-associated deaths to three resolutions (Res 1086, 1087, 1082) designed to enhance reporting of adverse health events during or after pregnancy. On October 29, the Council passed the resolutions as part of a package of legislation designed to turn the tide on maternal mortality, especially in New York City hospitals.
