In Conversation with Dr. Timnit Gebru and Minerva Tantoco on Ethical AI

October 12, 2022

On Wednesday, October 12, The AI Hub at NYU McSilver will host an illuminating discussion featuring several leading powerhouses in the artificial intelligence (AI) ethics space. Dr. Timnit Gebru, founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR) and Minerva Tantoco, Chief AI Officer at the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, will speak with moderator Christopher Hemphill, a highly-regarded data scientist who is Director of Commercial Intelligence at Woebot Health.

In Conversation with Dr. Timnit Gebru and Minerva Tantoco on Ethical AI will address how to reduce the potential harm of AI, as well as best practices to improve the ethical use of AI techniques. The discussion is the inaugural event in The AI Hub’s 2022–2023 Speaker Series.

“When properly applied, AI can be an effective tool to address challenges such as poverty, inequity, racism, wellness and behavioral health,” says Ms. Tantoco. “Yet, AI algorithms can also perpetuate, and even magnify societal biases against people of color, women and those with low income. Still, there are promising developments in the AI space with the potential to reduce disparities and benefit underserved communities. We look forward to exploring them during our discussion.”

Dr. Gebru, formerly of Google, is a world-renowned expert in algorithmic bias who is known for taking a stand on the ethical implications of AI. Ms. Tantoco was the inaugural Chief Technology Officer for New York City and holds four US patents on intelligent workflow. Christopher Hemphill is host of the “Hello Health” podcast and a 2022–2023 McSilver Fellow-in-Residence.
