NY Senate Advances Bill to Establish Black Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force

Silhouette of New York State

NEW YORK, February 2, 2022 — The NYU McSilver Institute congratulates the New York State Senate for passing Bill S3408, to establish a Black youth suicide prevention task force, under the leadership of Senator Samra Brouk. This is an important step toward addressing an alarming rise in suicide attempts among Black children and teenagers in New York and beyond.

Research led by NYU McSilver showed self-reported suicide attempt rates rising by 73 percent in Black adolescents between 1991 and 2017, and later research shows that disturbing trend continuing. We look forward to similar action by the New York Assembly; and ultimately, by the Governor.
