The McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at NYU Silver School of Social Work is pleased to announce the launch of a new quarterly web series, Degrees of Freedom.
Hosted by McSilver Institute Deputy Director Gary Parker, each 10-15 minute episode will feature a lively interview with a leading policymaker, researcher, or service provider making great strides to empower individuals and families living in poverty.
Degrees of freedom is a statistical term used in quantitative data analysis. However, the phrase also connotes and reflects the McSilver Institute’s mission to rapidly translate research-derived knowledge into action, ultimately resulting in communities rising together to overcome poverty.
Watch our premiere episode in which Dr. Robert Hawkins, the McSilver Associate Professor in Poverty Studies at the NYU Silver School of Social Work, explains a new approach to defining poverty and shares what he learned about living “at the intersection of racism and poverty” from his work in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
